Registration for Geographical Indications in Singapore was previously limited to al wines and spirits, but has now been extended to other agricultural and food products.<img class=\"wp-image-1672 alignright\" title=\"Singapore geographical indications\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sib.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Marchi_Tutela-prodotti-agroalimentari_104252720.jpg\" alt=\"Singapore geographical indications\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sib.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Marchi_Tutela-prodotti-agroalimentari_104252720.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.sib.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Marchi_Tutela-prodotti-agroalimentari_104252720-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sib.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Marchi_Tutela-prodotti-agroalimentari_104252720-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new registry is only one of the improvements in intellectual property protection in Singapore to be introduced gradually by the <a href=\"http:\/\/trade.ec.europa.eu\/doclib\/docs\/2013\/september\/tradoc_151761.pdf\">EU-Singapore Trade Agreement<\/a>, approved on 13 February 2019 by the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, expected to come into force by end 2019, provides for protection in Singapore of <strong>196 Geographical Indications of the European Union<\/strong>, about quarter of them Italian.<\/p>\n<p>Italian GIs to be protected under the new agreement include Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, Barolo and Chianti. The <a href=\"http:\/\/trade.ec.europa.eu\/doclib\/docs\/2013\/september\/tradoc_151762.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of GIs protected under the agreement<\/a> may be added to in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement with Singapore, which is by far the largest partner of the EU among member states of the Association of Southeast ASIAN Nations (ASEAN), is proving a model for other agreements with ASEAN member states: since launching negotiations with Singapore in 2010, the EU has also started bilateral talks with Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Agreements for the protection EU Geographical Indications and Denominations of Origin in south-east Asian countries are already in place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sib.it\/en\/flash-news\/eu-japan-trade-agreement-in-force-meaning-for-intellectual-property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with Japan<\/a> (2019), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sib.it\/en\/flash-news\/100-european-geographical-indications-to-be-protected-in-china-by-end-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with China<\/a> (2017) and with South Korea (2011).<\/p>\n<p><em>Related content<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sib.it\/en\/trademarks\/traditional-origin-agrifood-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Protection of Traditional Agrifood Products<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Singapore Intellectual Property Office has established a new Registry of Geographical Indications effective as of 1 April 2019.
