EUIPO launches new voucher in favour of new registrations of GIs for craft and industrial products
The SME Fund of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has just launched a new voucher intended to help cover the costs of new registrations, including the preparation of the product specification and official fees. The voucher can be worth up to 2000 euros.
The new protected geographical indication for craft and industrial products
Established by EU Regulation 2023/2411, the protected geographical indication for craft and industrial products (“non-agri GI” in the following) offers the same EU-wide protection provided for agri-food product GIs.
What can be registered as a non-agri GI
It is possible to register the name of any artisanal or industrial product that possesses qualities or a reputation linked to its geographical origin.
This represents a significant opportunity to enhance the value of and protect products linked to specific territories in sectors such as glass, leather goods, textiles, ceramics, wood, and many more.
European designations that have already obtained registration include Limoges porcelain (France), Idrija lace (Slovenia), Granito Cinza Claro de Pedras Salgadas stone, and Bracejo de Sortelha handcrafted baskets (Portugal).
Eligible applicants
The voucher new registrations of non-agri GIs may be requested by:
- individual producers falling within the definition of SME
- producers’ associations dealing in the same product including at least one SME member
- local or regional authorities or private entities designated by the state.
Eligible costs
- Costs for preparation of the product specification
- Italian and European Union registration fees.
The voucher covers 50% of expenses up to 2000 euros.
