Agreement reached on EU legislation concerning NGTs

On 3 December 2025, an agreement was finally reached between the European Commission, the European Council and members of the European Parliament concerning draft legislation on new genomic techniques (NGTs).

Thanks to the efforts of the Danish presidency of the council, a compromise appears to have been achieved on the sticking points that have held this regulation back since 2023 – namely patentability, traceability and sustainability.

This is certainly good news for innovators in the plant breeding industry, since the new legislation, in its definitive form, is expected to open up markets in the European Union for the biotech and agritech sectors.
